A poignant warning from Holocaust survivor Bernard Marks to Trump’s ICE Director has resurfaced. In 2017, Marks, who endured the horrors of Auschwitz and Dachau, delivered a heartfelt address during a public immigration debate, directly confronting then-ICE Director Thomas Homan. Adorned with a ‘Keep American Families Together’ sticker, he cautioned, ‘History is not on your side.’ Marks, who lost his entire family during the Holocaust due to their Jewish identity, condemned stringent immigration policies and implored Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones to refrain from aiding federal deportation initiatives. ‘I spent five and a half years in concentration camps because we targeted individuals,’ he remarked, drawing a compelling connection between historical injustices and contemporary immigration enforcement. His impactful message resonated with the audience and has gained renewed attention in light of current immigration discussions. Until his passing in 2018 at the age of 89, Marks remained a steadfast advocate for justice, education, and remembrance, asserting, ‘We can have a better country … a country without hate.’
